Raymond Pettibon and the Art of Hardcore Punk

Raymond Pettibon (born Raymond Ginn in1957) is an American artist who lives and works in New York City. He came to prominence in the early 1980s in the southern California punk rock scene, creating posters and album art mainly for groups on SST Records, owned and operated by his brother, Greg Ginn. He has since gone on to international acclaim, earning several awards and exhibiting in major galleries and museums.

Pettibon’s work is rooted in the comic strip. His drawings were known originally, particularly in the music scene, for their pointed and often biting messages, since many of his works were used as flyers or album covers by punk rock bands like Black Flag or Minutemen. Pettibon photocopied and stapled together his drawings to make simple magazines.

In the 1980s, Pettibon’s subjects were the decay of hippie culture, murder and suicide in the drug scene as well as repression by established society. Others include the examination of family, race and gender relations, religiosity and the Vietnam War. In the early drawings, he works with bitter, precisely placed punch lines.

Since the mid-1980s, Pettibon’s work has been regarded in the art scene as autonomous works. At the turn of the new millennium, his drawing style became raw and expressive, culminating in large-format color drawings in which he expresses his disillusionment and rage in sharp criticism of George W. Bush’s politics and the American war in Iraq.

Here's a selection of flyers Pettibon created for Black Flag shows:

RIVAL MOB - Hardcore For Hardcore

Hardcore For Hardcore

Are you really playing or are you playing yourself?
Maybe that guitar should have been left on the shelf...
Shiny new toys making some noise.
Here's where we separate the men from the boys.

Ain't gonna break.
For those who aren't fake.

Hardcore for hardcore. What the fuck else'?
You think you're a stan! You're only fooling yourself.
Not some false image that you've been trying to steal.
So you can step off until you've learned the real deal.

You're very different. You act really weird.
Or is that's just what's popular this year?
Well you're just a man and I know where you stand.
Another way to bury your head in the sand.

Ain't gonna break.
For those who aren't fake.

Hardcore for hardcore. Thats what I'm saying.
You think you're so weird? I know its games that you're playing.
So much time posing for your freak appeal.
So you can step off until you've learned the real deal.
